Empowering Digital Guardians Through LCMC Child Identity Formation Training

Loyola Centre for Media and Communications (LCMC) Empowered Parents and Educators on responsible Social Media Consumption through an online forum. This initiative under the LCMC’s Child Identity Formation (CIF) program, saw parents and guardians receive insights on how they can manage their children’s social media habits.

This engagement brought together about 40 participants including parents, teachers, religious leaders, and guardians seeking to acquire knowledge on how to understand and manage social media influence on children and young people.

“Consider how frequently you see young people absorbed in their smartphones, constantly engaging with social media content. It’s not just a casual activity; it has become a significant part of their daily lives.”

Recognizing the powerful influence of social media on the younger generation, Ms. Joy Kesenwa, LCMC’s Programs Manager, emphasized the importance of closely monitoring children’s online activities. “Consider how frequently you see young people absorbed in their smartphones, constantly engaging with social media content. It’s not just a casual activity; it has become a significant part of their daily lives,” she asserted.

One of her most impactful insights was on the social media gatekeeping Skills. Parents and guardians were invited to learn practical strategies for monitoring and regulating their children’s social media use. By setting clear guidelines and being more vigilant about the content their children are exposed to, they are better positioned to ensure that their children engage with positive, value-driven content that supports healthy development.

Miss Kesenwa also challenged the participants to apply practical methods for setting boundaries and fostering open communication about social media use. By applying these strategies, they can help children engage with digital content in a secure and supportive environment, minimizing exposure to harmful influences and encouraging positive interactions.

The discussion provided a transformative experience for all participants,
equipping them with the tools necessary to become effective gatekeepers in the digital world.

This session is part of a seven-session CIF training program offered by LCMC to parents and others involved in the holistic development of young people. LCMC provides similar programs with a mission to build resilience in young people, equipping them to navigate the challenges of the digital age.
